TENSION IN ZEMGALE: Tour Article

I woke up in the van as we parked at the food joint. The names of these towns were familiar, but in that moment, I couldn’t recall which town we were in. Everything seemed identical. “You passed out with music blasting full volume, Gaba”, Niklavs, the driver of our van, said to me. I am sitting up front next to him, Rudik and van’s audio speaker that was blasting Bette Davis Eyes by Kim Carnes full volume. As I shook myself back to reality, I realized, “I am on a freaking skate tour”.

Life’s short, they say, but during a 6-day skate trip, it does feel like an eternity. We were supposed to have a day off—a break from skating to explore some sights. That’s what I was promised by the all-mighty organizers (hereinafter ‘ORGs’). But as tensions rose in the initial days, slowing down became unlikely. Our plans for a chill day (and my hopes to give my back a break) were shattered when a crew member suggested, “Let’s check this one spot.” In the blink of an eye, we found ourselves back on the treadmill, cameras rolling. “Will this ever end?” I pondered. Soon, but not today.

You don’t need to be a neurotic freak to get all jittery around day three of a skate trip. While you do get to know your peers a lot better, it comes at a high price—your nerves. Fortunately for me, interactions with the crew were limited to expressions like, “You got it!”, “Yeah, next try ma G!”, “Ma man!” I could also just quote our tour’s anthem by saying, “Mike Jooooooones!” that would cheer everyone up and effectively help me escape a real conversation. Others, however, had a lot more downtime chilling at spots and thus had to interact. The main ORG Mr. Nesaule, for example, was in constant contact with everyone all the time, and by this, I mean he had to answer endless questions. “Nesaule, where are we going/eating/sleeping?”, “Nesaule, did you put drinks in the cooler?”, “Nesaule, where’s the parking?”, “Nesaule, where’s the cooler?” I don’t know how he handled it, but he did it a lot better than I would.

So, you have three tours behind your back as an ORG. What’s the number one lesson you have learned in the process of organizing a skate trip?
Get your spots planned beforehand! And remember – tours are too short to waste time in shitty spots. Even worse – they could destroy the crew physically and mentally.

Where’s the best spot the crew stayed this year?
Hmmm, hard to pick one, because every year I try to find the best possible options for the budget we have. But I have to say that this year Lielbornes Manor stood out, because it was in a unique area called Daugavas Loki + final night + the cover of Bogas zine was shot there. In addition, the scenery at the guest house Sprīdīši in Tērvete was picturesque. Slept in a renovated tea house with a beautiful view overlooking the whole estate.

Nesaule handing Monster the goodies

How do you manage tension in the crew?
Encourage the person to speak, hear them out, and finally talk it over. Whether one side or many – I generously want to have all sides involved to come down and remember that we are here to have fun and skate, so let’s rather do that and skip the rising tension. TALKING IS THE CURE, so act now!

What are your plans for the next summer trip?
We will go BIG in Vidzeme, the final year of the Latvian adventure series. It has to be the best tour we have ever organized with the experience of already 3 years of touring the other regions. I expect a surprising crew of riders (maybe some international guests or PRO’s), neatly planned spots, more supporters, lots of bangers and all in all just good times with the skateboard family.

Would you like to be just a member of the tour or you are an organizer for life?
Why not being both? Although, I would enjoy one tour as a member, at least could get more clips.

We started three days of the tour in MWR parks. Perfect warm up. Here’s Ralfs in Iecava
Roberts Potašs – pulling the white rapper on a rather skinny bank in Iecava next to the skatepark

Roberts Potašs, for those who don’t know, is the enigmatic Trank Boy who usually materializes from thin air and launches into action immediately. It was my first time with him on a trip, and he skated every spot. Even the tricks that slipped away from him received a legendary status and became topics for late night talks at the fireplace. Potašs was dubbed with a charming nickname ‘Alien’ due to his paranormal skills on a skateboard, and also, his bald head. Well, because of the head.

Roberts Potašs – Boardslide that slipped away, literally.

Sometimes to speed up the trick-landing process I place a good bet that would get the skater hyped to commit on the next try.  Basic bets include 2 euros or a beer, but I try to be more creative than that to really pump them up. So, I’d go for the absurd—75 beers instead. During the trip, I topped even that. I told Rudik that I will get a tattoo (my first one) saying “Sippin’ Drank” if he lands the line he was trying next try, and if not, he’d have to get it. Well, turns out getting inked does feel nice.

Rudolfs Rorbahs – two-trick line with a smith grind + Benett grind 180 in Iecava. Betting on a piercing next year.

I got my revenge on Rudik at the next spot. “If you don’t land this next try, you are allowed to only say ‘Mike Jones’ and nothing else for the next two and a half hours.” We shook hands, and … he bailed. I couldn’t tell if he was upset or not cause all I heard from him was a loud “Mike Joooones!!!” I was satisfied.

Rudolfs Rorbahs

Rudolfs Rorbahs – ss wallride 180 in Jaunolaine

How was it saying only “Mike Jones” for two and half hours?
It was funny, I had to motivate Potašs to do the boardslide down that wooden rail while being able to only say Mike Jones in different intonations.

Did you feel any tension on the trip?
Haa, not really I was having a blast the whole trip. But maybe the very last day a bit, but it was mellow.

What do you think about the kink rail? Do you count it?
Ahh it’s kinda 50/50, I probably should have done it better. But at the moment I was kinda in shock that I made it to the end, and  I didn’t realize how sketchy it was until you showed me the clip months later. I think I was kinda falling of the board before the curb even. Sucks, but I want to go back though.

I heard you didn’t like the song in your part of the vid? Any comments why?
Yeah, I wasn’t to hyped about it. Also the part was after the credits and I think it would be cool to have a faster maybe punk song, but it’s just me hah

You were also filming some clips. How was that?
Super fun. I didn’t know what I was really doing just kinda freestyling with the camera hah but I’m hyped how I filmed Niklāvs 50 in Uzvara.

Which supporter of the tour is your favorite?
Lielvardes alus 🍻

Rudik – Ollie (On one of the dopest spots we found in Kraslava)

Shout out Mangaļi for keeping them downtime warriors hydrated and Lielvārdes Alus for keeping the conversation going
Kaspars Polis Crook Bonk a rock with Rob on the cam

We have a tradition with Boga to drive one part of the road together in his car. While everyone’s in vans, Boga drives his trusty Mini Cooper on the tour. I join him, and we ‘discuss’ some serious matters. During that drive, I realized that Boga drives similarly to the way he skates—and I’m not talking about pushing speed limits. He’s always skating super hard, and if not, he’s running around shooting photos for his tour’s zine. The similarity extends to our drive; he’s not just navigating the road, he’s also flawlessly singing a Rick Ross album from start to finish.

Arturs “Boga” Bogdanovičs

Boga – Noseslide

Do you still like Mike Jones – Flossin? If it is on, do you get hyped?
Yes, yes, we’re homies. There wasn’t anything against him, it was just too much of the same song at one point. And I actually “My 64” is my go to song from his repertoire.

Your boardslide to switch manny was the last trick we filmed on the trip. How was that session like?
It was a great session and a nice battle. I’m not really a handrail person, but that one was of a good size for a combo. It was the very last spot, most of the people were already in the van and at one point I was the last one to battle and it felt like I’m holding everyone from going home, so that pressure didn’t help. It worked out and I was very pleased to hear you saying “they don’t even know that it’s a banger type of stuff”. It was your idea to call the trip Tension in Zemgale.

Can you give some insights into the Tension aspect of trip?
We were so desperate to have a title before the trip, haha. None of our ideas felt like a true one, so it only made sense to figure it out after the trip is done. I felt like this one had much more emotionally difficult to everyone than usual. But Sunday’s lunchtime when pretty much everyone got to their “pissed off” limits kind of settled the title in my head, haha.

You made a third zine from the trip. How this zine different.
The main difference is that it’s sold out. I returned to a similar layout style that I used for Latgalian Cruise, but the storytelling is like in Kuramo Voyage. So it’s sort of a mixture of first two with some new crispy additions. You have been all over the world.

Does a trip around Latvia excite you?
For sure! After three years I’m ready to sacrifice a contest trip abroad for this one. Even if the upcoming one wouldn’t be our last one of these series. Can’t wait to mark the dates in my calendar!

Boga – BS Heel

Time flies so fast. It feels like we just had our first tour, and now in 2024, we’re already planning the fourth one in Vidzeme, the last Latvian region we haven’t explored yet. In the end, no matter how much tension there was, it all stayed in Zemgale. What we have are pictures, videos, and good memories from times spent together in the streets of our beautiful country.

Big love and shout out to our friends and supporters without whom this wouldn’t have been as cool as it was:

Monkey gone to heaven

Monkey gone to heaven is a giga mix of (horizontal!!!) phone clips by Ralfs and Fredijs, two GenZs from Cesis. They went on a big stack mission around Latvia and Europe (Barcelona and Hanover). Their brainchild, Catnip Skateboards is an ideological continuation of Barspin skateboards (rip), so you can imagine what to except (warning for the oldheads). As for the rest of ya, enjoy the vid!

2023 Retrospective

Seems like skateboarding was a bit on hold in 2023. But on the second though, scrolling through IG story archives, digging through photo galleries, and just using your good old brains, you can surely say 2023 was a fulfilled year.

Here’s a list of notable events and non-events that we all need to remember and be thankful we witnessed in 2023.

Year of the Premiere

For our small scene to have 4 video premieres in one year is crazy. It all started with Linda’s “The Baltic Conncetion” video which premiered in KSuns on 6th of April. The flick recently dropped online after a couple of bonus screening with the most notable being Vladimir skate film festival in Croatia. Then Rob premiered his magnum opus dubbed Riga City The Experiment. The vid premiered on 13th of May also in KSuns. The Experiment came out with a clothing and boards collection. Rob made another skate vid for Tikari called “Fetish” which premiered on 13th of October in Zefires adding Tikari skateshop to a the list of local shops with full length vids behinds their belts. Both vids are yet to be released online. And on December 1st our own production “Tension in Zemgale” premiered in Oratorio.

Benches hijack

Piena Ledges aka the hottest spot of 2021 got taken down in 2023. It was not a huge surprise since it was a DIY spot (props to Riga DIY) and life spans of those are unpredictable. Surprise followed later in 2023 when the ledges materialized a couple kilometers south from their og location. Big thank you to Nauris Dollins for the insights. The flat is not good at the new location, the Kojusalas darzs, so no skating there: the benches are now used just for sitting (who would want to sit on them, hard to tell). As skaters we tend to repurpose objects in the streets to out needs. Well, we finally got treated with our own medicine. The benches designed for skating by us, got repurposed for sitting and chilling by the city.

Takeover Maxlas / Takeover GSD

The next generation of local skate scene doers is ripening. 2023 marked the noticeable activation of Takeover gang. Guys organized a couple cool things at the start of the year at Maxlas and then took GSD in their hands as well. Also, throughout summer Takeover boys updated Maxlas skateable trash collection and tested the nerves of security there. Seems like the big heads at Maxlas are ok with all that trash lying around. 2024 might bring more. We had a rail, a box, a wallie thing and a kicker there. Looking forward for something more original.

Jenkem Piece on Madars and Latvian scene

From time-to-time Latvian scene gets a blip of exposure on the worldwide arena :D. Yes, it is always Madars who spreads the word about Latvia. In 2022 he was featured in the Nine Club and last summer Jenkem, the skate world’s cheekiest media outlet, stepped on our soil do make mini documentary on him. They produced 17-minute documentary about Madars and touched a little bit of the scene too. Latvia was, quote, the most “remote” place they have visited to film a video piece. They showed Isolator, Maxlas, visited  Ventspils. The vid got received very well. Maybe next summer we’ll get more visitors here.

Clockwise skateshop demise

Legendary Riga’s Clockwise skateshop got sh*t done for good. Shop’s headman Arts Amoliņš explained the reasons for closing in an IG facebook posts. Arts mentions burn out, growing out of the project and taxes as the main reasons for closing. “Clockwise Skateshop has always been a For The Culture project, accordingly no one has ever received any remuneration other than a board or a hat there and everything I and the others have done is purely for enthusiasm and to send Latvian skateboarding culture, which in my opinion has also succeeded well.“ Also, worth remembering that Clockwise celebrated it’s last birthday in the beginning of 2023.

Opera wheels

2023 saw an emergence of a new brand in Latvian skateboarding. Maksims Feofilovs started Opera wheels in February 2023 with Fricis Štrauss, Martiņš Reitups, Kaspars Gobiņš and Maksims himself in the team. The brand released a cinematic commercial filmed by Rudolfs Henčels. The brand, though, a bit quite lately is still kicking it. There’s a new wheel coming soon from what we have heard.

Isolator Madness

The only time of the year when the murky walls of Isolator see any life (besides the lurking shadows of its fanatic preachers) is during the event of Isolator Madness. On that day the place lights up, its cheeks blush, and creepiness changes to charm. This year isolator Madness crew put in good effort to build a huge funbox, a bigger stage for a rock concert and cool things. It was loud, exciting, and intoxicating. Truly and event we will never forget. A huge shout out to LSK for holding it down.

Kristaps Horns Memorial opening

Kristaps Horns was a skateboarder from Cesis who tragically passed away in 2020. Last summer Kristap’s friends organized an installation of a memorial in the Cesis skatepark. Karlis Bogustovs was invited as an artist to develop and install the memorial statue. There was a skate jam around the opening of the memorial that we visited. We also went to skate around Cesis for a mini Around the Block event. We spent the evening at Mala bar, where we premiere “Svetavots 3” a video showing Ralfs and other Cesis locals. Kristaps would have been stocked.

“TENSION IN ZEMGALE” Premiere Recap

For the third year in row we celebrated the release of our tour video and tour zine in Zefirs, but this time with a little extra addition. “Tension in Zemgale” premiered in Oratorio which is a theater just right next to Zefirs. After so many events in Zefirs it was still surprising to find out that the little glass door we all hung out next to lead to a theater. Our professional manager Arturs Nesaule figured stuff out for us and made the premiere next level, literally as the premises of Oratorio are one floor above Zefirs. This year we had the biggest turn out so far. There’s no data on how many people showed up, but just from the looks of it, it was packed.

TENSION IN ZEMGALE

Going on a tour third year in a row has taught us a bunch of lessons. You basically know what is going to happen before the tour starts. No crystal ball needed, it’s easy.  First, someone, obviously, will get good tricks during the tour. We can even, sort of, predict who it will be. Yes, yes we are looking at you Tuna. On the contrary, someone is going to get exactly zero clips. All eye are on you Hugo :D. Second, someone will slam super hard. From what we have learned in previous years, the slam man is probably going to be Kaspars Polis (which he was but we didn’t put the slam in the vid. Was too gruesome). Third, as the friends of the tour are Monster energy, someone will also jug Monster more than water. Damn. Looking at you Kam. And the last but not least, some members of the crew will engage in some sort of tension. Yes, we had that, hence the name Tension in Zemgale, and we are looking at … well let’s not name any names :).

Even though you know what is going to happen, you still need to go on a tour to find out the details. Like, what that sick trick will be, will the gnarly slam end up in hospitalization, or what will the cause of that ‘friendly’ tension be. Another thing we certainly can’t guess without going on a skate tour, is the tour’s catch phrase. The crew will most certainly coin a catch phrase that will be uttered at any convenient and not so convenient moment. It is a phrase that is naturally and unanimously selected by the crew. And, usually, it is not too bright.

In the end of the day, going on a skate tour is one of the toughest yet most pleasant experiences a skateboarder can have. Peep more about our adventures in our “Tension in Zemgale” photo zine (available here), get inspired and go on your own skate tour with your mates.

Major shout out to our friends and supporters:

“Streeting Around” by Saldus Saldie

It is rare that a teenage skate crew would stick deep into 30+ dimension, espicially in Latvia. But here we are. Saldus Saldie been around for a while and today they present their recent street edit with an appropriate title: “Streeting Around”. More about the vid from Kaspars Polis.

We started shooting the film about three years ago. We thought that we should finally show that we can also do something in the streets. We’ve filmed videos before, but mostly it’s more skatepark footy than streets. We didn’t have a camera either, and nobody was really ready to film. Filming the film was not the easiest challenge. Adult life, one lives in one city, the other in another, and the rest in other countries.  We tried to film as much as possible when we met together, which was not that often. The film itself was filmed as much as possible outside of Riga, because we wanted to travel around Latvia and beyond. We were a bit tired of Riga spots seen in every video, so this decision (we couldn’t do without Riga spots either). We went on small trips to Rēzekni, Vilnius, Berlin, Pāvilosta, etc. We got to visit the cities of Latvia quite a bit, which was a good bonus. The basic idea of the film was to film a long video, each with its own part and have a good time. For various reasons, we came to the conclusion that we will still release a relatively short and compact video, but plus or minus we are satisfied with the outcome. There is enough material that maybe one of us will skip a part after this film. There is no special story about the name of the film, Ansis put together a video, the name of the film was not invented yet, then it just happened that he named that way. The film stars Ansis Rīters, Andis Vanadziņš, Kaspars Polis and Gints Frinde.

The Baltic Connection

Linda Lindenberga releases her video “The Baltic Connection” online after a year of local and international screenings. The Baltic Connection brings a little bit of a different flavor to skate videos. With its sincere interviews, original story telling, and uplifting message the vid captures a special moment in the Baltics skateboarding: a seed of a new scene. Veterans  might even remember themselves and how naïve and honest they were when starting skating, and as for newcomers, don’t know what can get you more juiced up to skate than this. Enjoy.

Smile by Fully Ghetto

Fully Ghetto gang must be the most consistent brand in the Baltics. The crew releases gear and videos consistently for several years and it is sick to see how the venture out of Lithuania into the bigger Euro scene. For the half of their new video “Smile” they skate famous spots in Berlin but also does not forget the local ground.  Stocked to see their progress and how things are going to evolve in the future.

RajonTV News: Tikari premiere

A local video premiere is a type of event you can’t miss for anything. Even if the premiere falls on Friday the 13th, you still must come cause nothing bad can happen to you in a mob of skaters, right? Well, you might lose an ear pod or a sober-October bet, but that’s nothing compared to all the good stuff. Tikari skateshop team gave us a lot of good stuff in their new video: Fetish. Roberts Krums delivered an engaging piece. Obviously RajonTV went down to lurk around and ask important questions. So, enjoy our little report. Looks like the video is not coming out too soon, but good news is that  there might be another screening so keep your eyes opened. Peace!
