This summer Backdoor Market provided pop-up space for weekly parties and frequent skate events too. For their closing one they collaborated with Monster Energy to host a big team jam. Bunch of teams (three skaters in each) had to skate in various mini challenges. A cool concept with a great turn up. Shout out to Backdoor and their team for hosting.
Armands Baumanis is a well known character in the local and Baltics scene. He’s the founder of Straightforward skateboards, the person who popularized the notorious “Pis Taisni” phrase in skate circles, and a skate video maker with three Straightforward movies behind his back. When Riga’s notorious DIY BARAX seized to exist, Armands left Riga to live in Spain. Warm weather and beaches didn’t push Armands to chill more, instead he kept getting better at skating and kept filming. Alma de Cantaro is a result of time spent in new home. We talked a bit with Armands about his time in Spain too.

Did any skater local Spanish skater knew where Riga was when you had to introduce yourself? Yes, some people have met Richi Dunkul before me, as he used to live around Malaga and now lives in Tarifa (around 170km down the cost). Also some people know Latvia from Basketball as they beat Spain recently. So maybe they know Latvia, not Riga exactly. Some of course are clueless.
Armands Bauamnis – Front Board
How did you blend in with the scene there? I just started to go skate to the main square (Plaza de Marina), also found a DIY park about 12km from me near the airport, gradually met more and more people and I think most of the people who skate here – know me now.
Any differences you have noticed between Spanish and Latvian skaters? I would say they are about the same, both would be late for a meeting. Depends. I know some locals who always come on time too, so more about the individual. Some locals sleep during the day, it’s like a tradition to them, to eat and then sleep, I never do that, so there is some differences I guess.
What drives your progress on the board at age of 36? My drive has always been to film my friends, get tricks on video, get photos and be better then the previous year. I still feel I have progress in me, I can do better. We all can. Just need to understand if that’s what you want.
Pavel Berezjuk – No Comply
To get that many clips you got to have some kind of routine. What your day looks like? My routine is quite consistent. I wake up around 7-8 in the morning, drink coffee, workout, start working, workout during workday 2-3 times more, eat around 2-3pm. Drink 3 more coffees. Finish my job at 6 – go skate. On workdays I skate flat and small stairs mostly, practice the tricks I plan to do on the weekend and then on one of the weekends I either go to the beach or I go film, usually for the whole day. I skate around 5-6 times a week. if I don’t skate on a weekday – I go to mountains or go on a bike ride after work. I do not do much else.
You told me once that you were filming this part and wanted to release it on your 40th birthday. Why did you change your mind on that? Yes, that was my plan for a while but everything changes so fast. I only stared filming around 6-7 months after coming here as I did not know anyone and had nobody to film or ask if they could film me. After a while I met my friend Alex, he started both filming and taking photos of me, I started inviting people to come and join us. Not long after that out of nowhere Alex opened a skate shop and started sponsoring me, so that motivated me to publish something before my 40th birthday. This video is basically around 9 months of filming + footy from Niks’ [Kolosovskis] camera while he was in Latvia and new Zealand during this time. As Eduard [Nehajenko] did not get to film that much with Niks, he sent me additional footy from his own archive to make his part bit longer.
Armands Baumanis – Heelflip
It is really cool to see some Latvian legends like Eduzuk rippin’. How was the video received there? I would say the people here like it, they feed off of me in a way. At least I like to think that I get them hyped and more motivated to try something. I like pushing people, and I always expect the most out of everyone.
Did you find new Barax in Spain? The new BARAX for me is now called ”la pista diy” – the DIY near Malaga airport. It has similar vibe to it. Specially when I come on a weekends and nobody else is there. Barax taught me to appreciate the time skating alone.
We are finishing off the first round of our championship with a heavy combo: Linards Viksniņš vs Arturs “Boga” Bognadovičš. Enjoy the game and the last day of summer.
Two Trank boys fellas are settling their things. Rudolfs also represents Tikari skateshop and Aleksis has moved from semi-amazing tricks to pretty decent ones.
We open our Championship with Marks and Arturs who both are from Aizkraukle. Arturs is a nerdy tech guy who’s made it to the finals in one of our previous championships. You can see Arturs everyday either at Maxlas or somewhere around the city. On the other hand, Marks is rarely seen skating, but he’s one of those lucky ones who don’t need to skate all the time to be good. Enjoy the game!
We are happy to announce that we are bringing back Game of Skate Championship. It is season 4, baby! Everybody has grown up, there are new skaters in the scene and it is about time to find out who’s flat game is the dopest.
Season 4, which is now rebranded to Game of RajonTV Championship™, will take place in Riga between 16 selected participants. We posting two games a week. Vans along side Tikari Skateshop and Monster energy were kind enough to hook us up in this project. So big shout out to them. We’ve also got our newest intern Emilija Stoka on the camera for this one. First games are dropping this weekend!
We love go skateboarding day around here, so every year local shops, organizations, crews etc. get together a make a collective plan for the day. This year was divided into two parts. With first being run by Takeover boys and the latter by Tikari skateshop and Boards.lv. Vans, LSK and KFC(? (yes, the chicken one)) Thank you everyone who got evolved in making this special day possible.
(We got a mini video and some photos from Herbe) Enjoy!
The day started at Viesturdarzs and OG spot for Go Skate Days. In 2007 during Emerica Wild in Streets Viesturdarz was also one of the first spots. Remarkable.
Some youngsters waiting in line to throw kickflips down the drop.
After Viesturdarz we went to one of the best/worst spots in town, the someday-to-be-legendary double bank behind Kongresu nams. It sucks, but when Riga skaters see a bank, the don’t think twice.
Oh, that sweet TrrrTrrrrTrrrrrTrrrrr sound. You can just hear it through the image. So hot.
No Go Skate day is complete without hitting Rainis.
Takeover boys spiced up Rainis with a kicker. Smart.
Spanish grind – a great plaza trick. With that the classic Riga center spot circle was completed and everybody returned to safety aka Maxlas Muzejs.
First challenge at Maxlas was the Vans Shoes Box. Og Sula Rudzits pulled a nollie bs ts on it.
Niklavs bs smith it in between MC duties.
Ragdoll challenge was a new addition to our events. The crowd like it.
Ragdoll winner got a KFC diner.
Flat bar challenge followed. Best trick and longest grind/slide. Rudik nailed it. Duh…
We couldn’t go without our favorite set up: kicker over something. This time it was a rail.
They turned it around a bit later and started grinding it. I don’t know why but it reminded me of Jeremy Rogers’ opening in Year Right. Thankfully no one got in that predicament.
Boga was the last one skating and finished the session with a fs hurricane. Yes, I call it frontside because it is frontside.
Overall it was a cool day. Thank you everyone who got involved and showed up. Love to see the next gen taking over (pun intended). Also, peep the vid. Have a great one! Peace.
Harsh, rugged and cold: these sensations come through when watching Roberts Krums’ magnum opus video “RIGA CITY THE EXPERIMENT”. In a way, the video offers a realistic image of Riga city, a portrait of one of its many sides. It is mostly cold, wet and dark around here, and the video shows exactly that: a lot of late night and off season skateboarding with a small touch of magic (Fricis does his switch bigspin at Maxima stairs at a late November evening on his birthday). You’re in for a treat here, so grab some popcorn, an open mind and enjoy.
